Cape Town - SuperSport United were crowned the Metropolitan Under-19 Premier Cup champions when they beat a competitive Ajax Cape Town 1-0 at Erica Park in Belhar on Monday afternoon.

Ajax Cape Town were unable to find the back of the net against SuperSport United’s impenetrable defence, although they can take pride from a performance in which they were arguably the better team.

SuperSport settled the quicker of the two teams, but it was Ajax who created the first clear chance. Masilake Phohlongo sent Grant Margerman through on the right, but the midfielder scuffed his shot and it flew wide in the 18th minute. Godfrey Pelston almost got his name on the scoresheet, but his shot was deflected for a corner.

Ten minutes after the break Nelson Maluleke opened the scoring for SuperSport after some nifty touches on the edge of the box, putting the ball beyond the Ajax keeper Darren Johnson.

The Ajax goalkeeper was forced to make several saves to keep his side in the game. SuperSport moved up a gear after taking the lead, playing with confidence and intelligence to force Ajax on to the back foot, but they were unable to add to their tally.

SuperSport took home R45 000 in prize money and Ajax pocketed R20 000.
