Comoros Island – Local team Volcan de Moroni crashed to a 4-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in an African Champions League preliminary round, first leg clash in the Comoros Island on Sunday afternoon.

Central defender Erick Mathoho provided the inspiration and the goals in the Soweto club’s comprehensive victory. The tall, elegant centre-back netted twice as Amakhosi now take a healthy, four-goal advantage into the second leg in Johannesburg next week.

Chiefs were in control right from the start and made their dominance count in the 10th minute when Bernard Parker opened the scoring with a fantastic shot from range. And then, in the 39th minute, when Camaldine Abraw was fouled outside the penalty area, Parker whipped in the free-kick and Mathoho was at hand to power in the header to make it 2-0.

The second half proved to be no different and it wasn’t long before Chiefs were 3-0 ahead. Siphiwe Tshabalala’s corner in the 54th minute had the Volcan defenders in a state of disarray and Mathoho made the most of the melee by turning the loose ball into the net.

To change things around a bit, Chiefs coach Steve Komphela made three substitutions, bringing in Siboniso Gaxa, Siphelele Mthembu and Ugandan attacker, Sula Matovu.

And it was Matovu who finished it off for Amakhosi, latching on to Abraw’s pass to round off a convincing 4-0 victory for the South Africans.
