Ghana's John Mensah has a thigh strain.

Ngouni, Gabon February – Ghana coach Goran Stevanovic said Saturday Lyon defender John Mensah will face a late fitness test ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Tunisia.

Ghana skipper Mensah is nursing a thigh muscle injury he picked up against Botswana, but he was on the bench for the final group game against Guinea on Wednesday.

“We will do everything possible for him to play this match. He will train this evening and we will see how it goes,” said Stevanovic at a press conference at the team's training base in Ngouni, 42 kilometres from Franceville.

Rennes defender John Boye has done very well in place of the injured Mensah, but it is now left to the coach whether he will go for experience over youth.

Mensah also said he has regained his fitness after undergoing special exercises to quicken his recovery.

“I'm fine now, doing some extra training as ordered by the staff,” said the experienced central defender.

The Lyon defender is Ghana's only major injury concern leading into Sunday's clash against Tunisia as officials have declared the rest of the squad healthy. – Sapa-AFP
