Dakar - Alain Giresse will not have his contract renewed as Senegal coach in the wake of a group stage exit at the Africa Cup of Nations, the country's football federation said.

“We will continue to work without Alain Giresse; his contract will not be renewed,” Augustin Senghor, president of the Senegalese Football Association, said.

The former France international Giresse was in charge of the 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists since 2012. His contract was to expire on February 8.

Senegal failed to qualify for the 2013 Afcon and the 2014 World Cup, and their group stage exit Tuesday in Equatorial Guinea made them miss the quarter-final target set by the domestic federation.

Giresse hinted after the 2-0 defeat against Algeria Tuesday that he was set to leave his post, and preferred to fly directly to France instead of returning with the delegation to Dakar.

I prefer not to go to Senegal, because I know the situation must be very tense there; I will do it later,” he said.
