Kirsten Nematandani, the president of the SA Football Association, has got behind the country's club teams facing first-round continental matches at home this weekend.
Nematandani said in a statement on Friday that Orlando Pirates, playing Angolan team Recreativo do Libolo in a first round, first-leg African Champions League clash, could repeat their feat of 1995 when they won the competition.
Pirates face the Angolan outfit in Port Elizabeth on Sunday, while relegation threatened Black Leopards square up against Zimbabwean side Motor Action FC in a first-leg preliminary round Confederation Cup clash in Polokwane on Saturday.
“While this will be a maiden journey for Leopards, we are confident they have the hunger, desire and spirit to do well against some of the best clubs on the continent,” Nematandani said.
“This is familiar territory for Pirates. The 2010/11 PSL Champions have assembled one of the best sides ever and we are positive they can emulate the 1995 feat in which they went all the way to conquer Africa.
“We wish the two teams well, and hope they will do the country proud.” – Sapa
