Acting President of the South African Football Association (Safa), Mandla Mazibuko on Tuesday clarified the situation on claims that Safa President Kirsten Nematandani has been toppled as the Chairperson of 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Local Organising Committee (LOC).
Mazibuko confirms that Vice-President Chief Mwelo Nonkonyana has been tasked as the interim Chairperson of the LOC until the next fully-fledged board meeting where Government will be represented.
Mazibuko further explains that it is common practise that when the president is out of the country, one of his deputies acts on his behalf.
“The President is out of the country and we had to delegate responsibilities to various members and it is for that reason that I am the acting president of the association and this should in no way be construed as an overthrow of the president. I am just holding fort,” said Mazibuko.
In the meantime, Chief Nonkonyana has strongly denied making any statements to the media on this matter.
“These statements where manufactured and I strongly condemn such sensational journalism in the strongest terms,” said Nonkonyana. – Sapa
