The two Cape Premiership teams have avoided each other in the Telkom Knockout last-16 draw, but both face tough encounters in a bid to reach the quarter-finals.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, and fellow giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates all received home fixtures following the draw at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Newcomers Cape Town City were first out of the drawing pot and will play in their maiden Knockout fixture at home to Bloemfontein Celtic, but Ajax Cape Town have to travel to Pretoria to take on SuperSport United.

Eric Tinkler’s City will fancy their chances of toppling Celtic after they won their last game at Cape Town Stadium against Ajax, while Roger de Sa’s Urban Warriors have a difficult task against Stuart Baxter’s SuperSport.

“We must do a hit and run, and hopefully get a home draw for the quarters,” Ajax striker Toriq Losper was quoted as saying on the team’s Twitter handle.

“It’s always better to face a top side, so we’ll be very motivated,” added Joaquim Lupeta.

Tall striker Nathan Paulse said: “Tough one, they have a good squad and coach. Cup game is a once-off opportunity. Excited!”

Champions Sundowns will welcome Polokwane City to Pretoria, while Kaizer Chiefs will host Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates landed Golden Arrows as opponents.

Dates and venues have not been confirmed as yet, but Cape Town City said on their Twitter account that the games could take place on either October 19 or 22.
