Serious injuries to Ben Foster and Fraser Forster have rocked the England squad and Roy Hodgson struggled to put on a brave face.

‘We thought we had three top-class goalkeepers and now we only have one (Joe Hart),’ said the England manager.

It probably was not what back-up keepers Rob Green and Jack Butland wanted to hear, but at least he was honest. ‘We were devastated,’ said Hodgson, when asked about Forster, who could be out for the rest of the year after surgery on a broken kneecap.

‘There’s not much you can do to cheer him up. It’s the same with Ben Foster, who will be out for the rest of the season and a good way into next. It’s an opportunity for every goalkeeper in the country to show me what they can do.’

Hodgson also insisted he remains relaxed about his future.

His contract ends after Euro 2016 and FA chief Greg Dyke said this week that talks on a new deal will come sometime in the next year.

Hodgson, 67, said: ‘Yes, absolutely (I am relaxed). We have an important task. It’s all very well talking about England in France but we’re not there. We’ve got six matches to win — a big task.’ – Daily Mail
