Chelseas manager Andre Villas-Boas has been ordered to improve results after holding a second round of talks in four days with Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea’s manager Andre Villas-Boas has been ordered to improve results after holding a second round of talks in four days with Roman Abramovich over his future yesterday.

The Russian billionaire also called in director of football Michael Emenalo to explain the club’s failings this season, which have left them out of the Barclays Premier League title race and struggling to maintain a Champions League spot for next season.

Abramovich spent the entire day at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, this time with director Eugene Tenenbaum, monitoring training and holding meetings with coaching staff.

Villas-Boas last night insisted he was relaxed about the owner’s visit, saying it had had a ‘good impact’.

He added: ‘Roman is always very interested in the running of events and it was good for the team to feel his presence. We touched a little bit, of course, on next year’s project but mainly on Sunday’s (United) game.

‘Roman is a very educated person to the cause of Chelsea Football Club and his aura is always present.’

Villas-Boas first came under scrutiny by Chelsea’s board after he surprisingly conceded the title on Boxing Day.

The rookie manager, who arrived from Porto in the summer, infuriated the dressing room by admitting Chelsea were out of the hunt after drawing with Fulham.

Frank Lampard then declared he ‘had the hump a little bit’ because he had been part of three Premier League title-winning teams under two managers at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea skipper John Terry also admitted he would ‘never give up until it was mathematically impossible’ to win the league.

With Chelsea 14 points behind league leaders Manchester City, Abramovich is finally demanding answers of his coaching team.

He spent nearly half an hour talking to Chelsea’s players in the dressing room after they threw away a three-goal lead against Manchester United on Sunday.

The Chelsea owner had watched training the previous day and asked Villas-Boas for the team’s tactics.

Some sources at the club insist Villas-Boas has been warned about his future at the club. The Russian had previously not visited the training ground for months while he concentrated on defending the civil court action brought by former business partner Boris Berezovsky.

He has decided to take a more hands-on approach in an attempt to stop the issues at the club escalating.

Abramovich inherited one manager, has hired another six and fired five of them during a turbulent, yet largely successful, reign at Stamford Bridge.

Villas-Boas admitted that the ‘ghost’ of Jose Mourinho still haunts the club and the Real Madrid coach remains Chelsea’s most successful manager.
