London - Jamie Carragher on Monday night made a passionate plea for cheaper tickets for Premier League football fans and explained why he joined the Anfield walk-out on Saturday.

More than 1 ,000 supporters left Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland in the 77th minute to protest against ticket prices for next season, the highest of which will be £77. And the Sportsmail columnist was among them.

Carragher believes top-flight clubs have a duty to look after their fans, particularly as the new £8billion TV deal will make them richer than ever.

He said: ‘The decision to implement the most expensive seats in the club’s history has led to uproar on Merseyside and the backlash during the game against Sunderland has brought this issue sharply into focus.

‘I was at Anfield when Liverpool fans took their stand. I know the increase will not impact on me but I also know plenty about my city - £77 is too much to watch a game anywhere, but that price is particularly over the top in Liverpool. Why can’t normal working people have the chance to sit in that part of the stadium? It isn’t fair.’
