Cech signs new Chelsea deal

Prague – Champions League victors Chelsea received another boost on Monday when their star goalkeeper Petr Cech signed a new four year contract with them.

The 30-year-old Czech Republic international - who lived up to his nickname as 'Mr Perfect' in the Champions League final win over Bayern Munich saving Arjen Robben's injury-time penalty and two more in the shootout - has been at the Blues since 2004.

In that time Cech - who wears protective headgear since suffering a serious head injury in October 2006 - has accrued aside from the Champions League three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two League Cups since joining from French side Rennes.

The former Sparta Prague keeper, capped 89 times and one of the few survivors in the present Euro squad from the side that reached the Euro 2004 semi-finals, said he was looking forward to more successful times at Chelsea.

“I believe the next four years will be as successful as the eight I've spent with the club so far,” Cech said on his website www.petr-cech.cz.

The Czechs begin their campaign against Russia on June 8, Euro 2004 champions Greece - who beat them in the semi-finals on their way to the final - on June 12 and Poland on June 16 in Group A, in the southern Polish city of Wroclaw near the Czech border. – Sapa-AFP
