Pep Guardiola has bemoaned Manchester City’s lack of cutting edge amid the club’s worst run for eight years.

City have not won any of their last six games, Guardiola’s most alarming spell in management. They failed to score in three and conceded 12 in that time.

Guardiola yesterday made it clear his team desperately need a victory today at West Bromwich Albion — and said he is enduring similar anxiety to his five-match winless streak at Barcelona in 2009.

‘I think it was a worry then, like now,’ he said. ‘I think the same — you have to win right now, for the mind for the players. Maybe this situation will make us stronger for the future. Normally, when you win, you get time. People didn’t think I needed time after we won at Stoke.’

Having seen his side fail to score in the EFL Cup defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday, Guardiola wants his players to be more clinical.

‘Until the goal from United we had more of the ball closer to the goal than United,’ he said. ‘Five or six times we were clear but David de Gea didn’t have to save. We are there but we didn’t finish.

‘That is what we have to improve. If not, it is so difficult. In the end, the difference between the big clubs is how you are in the boxes.’
