Eden Hazard has been poised on the brink of a Chelsea milestone for more than seven months, with his personal goal drought now two minutes short of 37 hours.

Hazard has scored 49 times for the club he joined from Lille in 2012, but none since early May when he headed the winner against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge to clinch the Barclays Premier League title.

His penalty was saved but last season’s PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year reacted quickly to nod in the rebound and take his total for the season to 19 in all competitions for Chelsea.

Since then Hazard has scored five for Belgium but has drawn a blank for his club. He thought he had scored against Arsenal in September but it was ruled to be an own goal by Calum Chambers, and he fired a penalty over the bar against Maccabi Tel Aviv. Against Porto on Wednesday, he hit the woodwork late in the game, before he was replaced in the last minute.
