Jose Mourinho bristled with mischief as he delivered his festive thoughts while he challenges for a third Barclays Premier League title.Mourinho could not resist another verbal swing at Arsene Wenger and the Arsenal fans who branded his team ‘Boring, boring Chelsea’ during Monday’s goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium.
He also claimed league leaders Liverpool had it easy without European football to interfere with preparations and had the usual dig at Rafa Benitez, but he started by taunting Arsenal.
‘Boring are a team who play at home and cannot score a goal,’ said Mourinho. ‘You fill your stadium, in weather like we had on Monday, to see victories. If any team were boring, they were boring because Petr Cech made zero saves.’
Mourinho was delighted with his team at the Emirates. They were tight in defence and dangerous on the break after three days of tactical work following a Capital One Cup defeat at Sunderland.
‘It is not a coincidence that before this game we had time to work,’ said the Chelsea boss. ‘That is something we didn’t have since the summer.‘I had three days to work tactically and I worked on everything I wanted to: defensive set pieces, attacking set pieces, defensive organisation, transitions, counter attack.‘It was a special week for us.
It was the kind of week Liverpool have every week.’ It was a reminder that leaders Liverpool, who visit Stamford Bridge on Sunday, are not in Europe and went out of the Capital One Cup in September.
As for Tottenham’s decision to appoint Tim Sherwood as manager, Mourinho offered only sympathy for Andre Villas-Boas, his former colleague turned rival who was sacked by Spurs.‘My only problem is to feel sorry for the manager who lost his job a couple of days before Christmas when he was enthusiastic about going forward with his contract at Tottenham,’ said Mourinho.
‘Who they appoint, permanent or not permanent, experienced or not experienced, to me is not a problem. My thoughts are only going to Andre and the other four guys who lost their jobs.’ Asked if he could see Chelsea employing a manager without experience or the required coaching qualifications, he burst out laughing.
Avram Grant replaced him in 2007 without a Uefa Pro licence or Premier League experience.Chelsea are two points from the top in a congested title race before two home games in four days, starting with Swansea today.
Mourinho urged fans to play their part in the push for the summit.‘Supporters who see their team playing at home have a privilege and they have to come and support the team,’ he said.
‘Boxing Day is a big day in football in this country, especially for the teams playing at home, and after that comes Liverpool, the leaders now.’ Mourinho joked that he preferred the title race in 2005-06 when Chelsea led from the front and won with 91 points but he is relishing the contest developing between well-matched teams this season.
‘It is fantastic,’ he said. ‘The pressure is there. I have told the players, some of them, they have to learn how to cope and express themselves in this situation.
‘When you are 20 points behind the leader, you can win 6-0 at home but it means nothing.’ Here was his dig at Benitez, who was Chelsea boss for the 8-0 thrashing of Aston Villa last December.Mourinho maintained there was no prospect of reinforcing the squad with a striker in January.‘No, no, no, no, no,’ he said.
‘Some guys cleverer than me get easy jobs and go to places where it is easy to win. For me it is always difficult.‘Inter was difficult. At Real Madrid, I was against probably the best side in the last 20 or 30 years. Here, I am in a transitional period. So I am not clever in choosing easy jobs.’ – Daily Mail
