London - Claudio Ranieri says Leicester City are now even more of an outside bet to win the Premier League than this time last year.

Ranieri, who led the Foxes to the title in May, said: “If at the beginning of last season the bookmakers quoted 5 000-1 for our chances of title, this time it should start from 6 000-1.

“The first goal is 40 points to be safe. Then we will raise the bar.’

Ranieri, in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, said City”s first ever Champions League campaign will be “an exciting experience”. He added: “But it burns treasures of energy. It can happen to lose a few more games and then you will measure our ability to react.”

Ranieri likened Jamie Vardy, who snubbed Arsenal to sign a new Leicester contract, to Italian legend Luigi Riva who resisted lucrative offers to stay at Cagliari in Sardinia. “It was huge, it gave a signal.”

However, in-demand Riyad Mahrez has not signed a new deal and Steve Walsh, their head of recruitment, is being lured away by Everton.
