Liverpool, England – Liverpool says director of football Damien Comolli has left the Premier League club by mutual consent.

Comolli, who joined Liverpool in November 2010, says he is moving back to his native France “for family reasons”.

Comolli had responsibility for the club's transfer strategy, which has been heavily criticised in the past year with expensive signings Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing failing to impress.

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner says “the club needs to move forward ... it is important that everyone joins us in supporting the manager and gets behind Kenny and the team and focuses on a strong finish to the season.”
