Jose Mourinho will make a last-ditch appeal to Roman Abramovich to sign an A-list striker before the transfer window closes after becoming disenchanted with the firepower on offer at Chelsea.
Mourinho has been underwhelmed by what he has seen so far from Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Romelu Lukaku, pointing out in private that they scored one of Chelsea’s 12 goals in pre-season.
He snapped up Samuel Eto’o from Anzi last week and, even at the age of 32, will regard the Cameroon striker as his first-choice forward. The pair worked well together at Inter Milan.
Although time is short, Mourinho would feel much happier challenging for honours with an established No9. He wants inquiries made about Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski and Karem Benzema, his main striker at Real Madrid last season. Two bids for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney were turned down and Mourinho realised a third bid would be futile.
Fulfilling Mourinho’s wish will not be easy now. The main problem is that it will be extremely difficult to shift Fernando Torres from the payroll, given his wages.
Mourinho is unconvinced by the Spaniard despite his excellent goal in Chelsea’s European Super Cup game against Bayern Munich on Friday and Torres has been a disappointment following his British record £50million transfer from Liverpool in January 2011.
