It’s incredible that David Moyes has used a different starting line-up in all of his 39 games this season, but it just shows how difficult he has found it to get the balance right.

The challenge for any manager is to work out your best team, but you have to do that quickly. If not, you end up with a lot of changes and there is a danger in that.

When I was at Aston Villa, we had wholesale changes every week, not only in personnel but systems. When a manager does that, players wonder if it is a lottery as to whether you play or not. Moyes has also shuffled players around, which does not help.

I think Chris Smalling is a future United centre half, but he is used as a utility man. If you keep moving players it’s as if you don’t take them 100 per cent seriously to play in their best position, but if you give players a long run in a position they feel that trust, grow in stature and improve in their performances.

David de Gea and Patrice Evra pick themselves and I think Smalling is the future at centre half.

And even though he’s leaving in the summer, Nemanja Vidic would get in my starting XI. Right back is a tough one, but I think Antonio Valencia can do a job there. He has played there before, Moyes likes the width he offers and he has enough energy to get up and down the line. Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher provide a solid midfield platform, then you can use Adnan Januzaj and Juan Mata slightly wider. Both like to cut in, so you can accommodate your most creative midfielders but still get width through your full backs. Then Robin van Persie leads the line with Wayne Rooney dropping off. – Daily Mail
