Rio Ferdinand has told Manchester United there is no guarantee he will sign a new contract.

Ferdinand’s deal runs out in the summer but Sir Alex Ferguson believes he can perform at the highest level for another ‘two or three years’ and has indicated Ferdinand will be offered a 12-month extension.

However Ferdinand, 34, has battled a back complaint in recent years and will take his time before deciding whether to play on.

‘You take every week as it comes,’ Ferdinand told Inside United magazine.

‘The best thing I can do is to look at it at Christmas and then again in the summer to see how I’m feeling and go from there.’ – Daily Mail
