Robin van Persie has been told he must adapt better to Louis van Gaal’s rigorous Manchester United training methods if he is to have an Old Trafford future.

Van Persie ended last season with just 10 goals after a frustrating year of injuries and indifferent form under the manager who made him Dutch captain at last summer’s World Cup.

The 31-year-old has a year left on his contract and is keen to stay but has been left under no illusions about what he must do if he is to play a meaningful role at all next season.

Sportsmail understands that Van Gaal has told Van Persie that he will not be of use to him unless he finds a way to cope with the arduous sessions at United that ultimately proved too much for Radamel Falcao. The Colombian has moved to Chelsea after failing to impress during a season on loan at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is not forcing Van Persie out at United and knows that if he were to sell the ex-Arsenal star he would need to buy two more strikers. Equally, he does not believe Van Persie doesn’t try in training.

Serie A clubs have shown interest in the striker but his earnings — the best part of £1million a month — are beyond all but the biggest European clubs. – Daily Mail
