London - While his replacement was busy losing in the Club World Cup final in Japan, former Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo was adding another trophy to his cabinet.

Sacked last month by owner Roman Abramovich, the 42-year-old Italian was named coach of the year at the Credit Suisse Sports Awards in Zurich on Sunday for his role in guiding Chelsea to last season’s historic Champions League title, and the FA Cup.

But it is a different story for interim Blues manager Rafa Benitez, who has won just three of his first seven games in charge. The Spaniard had hoped to arrive in London yesterday with the club’s first trophy of the season but a humiliating defeat by Corinthians has done little to appease Chelsea’s expectant fans.
