Harry Kane will have another scan on his injured ankle, meaning there is still no timescale on his return.

Tottenham’s leading striker turned awkwardly after netting the winner against Sunderland on Sunday and has injured his ligaments.

In Tottenham’s pre-match press conference ahead of hosting Gillingham tonight in the EFL Cup, manager Mauricio Pochettino turned to his trusted assistant, Jesus Perez, to explain the extent of the problem and said: ‘Help me, Jesus.’

Perez said: ‘The swelling is quite big so it’s impossible for the scan to give the exact extent of the damage.’

With Kane out, Vincent Janssen, signed from AZ Alkmaar for £17million in the summer, will get a chance up front, but the match gives an opportunity for some of Tottenham’s young prospects.

Harry Winks, Josh Onomah and Cameron Carter-Vickers should all play a part, but it was 17-year-old attacking midfielder Marcus Edwards who drew the most unexpected comparison from Pochettino yesterday.

The Argentine admitted Edwards reminds him of a young Lionel Messi.

‘The qualities, it’s only looks, his body and the way that he plays, they remind me a little bit from the beginning of Messi,’ Pochettino said. ‘He’s small, he’s left-footed. And a little bit of Erik Lamela when he was at River Plate, when he was aged 14 or 15, he took the ball, didn’t give a pass and shot straight away. Edwards can be a top player but we need to be patient and tell him that he has enough talent to be a great player. It’s how he builds his future.’
