Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are among the sides to have shown interest in Mario, who has been capped eight times by Portugal and is in his country’s squad for Euro 2016.
But Mourinho - whose priority is strengthening United’s core - believes he can lure his countryman to Manchester this summer.
Mourinho feels Mario - scorer of the only goal when Portugal Under 21s faced England in the Euros last year - can energise a midfield prone to drifting through games.
