Liverpool have struck a deal in principle to sign Victor Valdes.

The Spain goalkeeper is expected to seal his move provided he passes a medical next month.

Valdes, who is a free agent having run down his contract at Barcelona, is currently sidelined as he recovers from cruciate ligament damage.

Brendan Rodgers wants 32-year-old Valdes — who had been set to join Monaco before being left stricken in March — to provide competition for current No 1 Simon Mignolet.

There is nothing to stop other clubs making Valdes, a three-time Champions League winner and six-time champion in La Liga, a rival offer but Liverpool are confident that they are in pole position for the player’s signature.

Bringing in another keeper was the only thing Liverpool had not achieved during the transfer window, as they missed out on Michel Vorm, who joined Tottenham from Swansea, as well as Alex McCarthy, who joined QPR from Reading. – Daily Mail
