Exotic car dealerships in Pretoria must be licking their lips for the arrival of Khama Billiat in the nation’s capital.
Ajax Cape Town yesterday announced that they have finally completed a deal to sell Billiat to Mamelodi Sundowns, after lots of hold-ups over the last few weeks.
And Billiat will be smiling all the way to the bank.
According to insiders, Billiat could make up to R4million in wages, bonuses and signing-on fees during his first year at Sundowns. His salary will also increase between 8-10% over the three-year contract period.
After the three years, Sundowns and Billiat have an option to extend the deal by another one or two years.
Ajax’s deal with Sundowns, which includes former Santos striker Eleazar Rodgers joining the Urban Warriors on loan for the season, is about R8.5m.
Ajax will make in the region of R6.5m in cash for the sale of Billiat, while Sundowns will continue to pay Rodgers’s wages during his stay in Cape Town.
However, a large sum of the transfer fee must go to the Aces Academy, the Zimbabwean football academy which developed Billiat. Other players which have come through the academy’s doors include Kaizer Chiefs stars Knowledge Musona and Lincoln Zvasiya.
While Nigel Munyati of the Aces Academy remained coy about the percentage they must receive, the Cape Times understands that 25% of the deal must make its way into the academy’s coffers.
“We are proud that one of our products is joining another big club in South Africa,” Munyati told the Cape Times yesterday from Zimbabwe. “We wish Khama all the best, and we know his success will also help our national team.”
However, the deal is less than the R10m offered by Belgian giants Club Brugge for Billiat.
Ajax had talks with Brugge after announcing on Thursday night that the deal with Sundowns was off, after Billiat couldn’t agree terms with the Brazilians.
The biggest snag in the deal was that Sundowns were offering a five-year contract, while Billiat only wanted to sign a three-year deal.
Yesterday, though, Ajax’s co-owner Ari Efstathiou announced that the deal is finally done. “Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns re-engaged and agreed to reinstate the terms of the agreement between the parties involved.
“Khama has agreed to the personal terms offered by Sundowns, and as a result Eleazar Rodgers will be reporting to Ikamva tomorrow morning.”
Ajax have now lost two of their best players in attack from last season, after they decided not to renew Mabhuti Kheneyza’s contract before the start of the campaign. Khenyeza, who last week had his 12-month suspension for spitting on a match official lifted, has since joined newly-promoted Mpumalanga Black Aces.
Nathan Paulse and Rodgers will now fight it out for a starting berth upfront for Ajax, while new Bafana attacker Lebogang Manyama could also spearhead the Cape side’s attack. - Cape Times
