Ajax miss out on MajoroComment on this story
Cape Times – Ajax Cape Town have bungled the chance to sign Lehlohonolo Majoro after the player’s agent Tim Sukazi failed to agree to a deal for the striker in Cape Town yesterday.
According to a source close to Majoro and Sukazi, the Kaizer Chiefs player and his agent are now heading to Mpumalanga Black Aces to conclude a deal.
Ajax chief Ari Efstathiou told the Cape Times on Wednesday that they were in “a long line of clubs” negotiating for the player. However, he was coy about the former Bafana Bafana man joining the Urban Warriors.
“We did enquire about Majoro, because we are looking to add to our strike force. We are also in line asking about the player and we spoke recently,” Efstathiou said.
But the Cape Times received information that Efstathiou phoned Sukazi last night during Bafana’s African Nations Championship match against Mali. Sukazi was a spectator at the game, and let Efstathiou know that the deal is off the table.
This is a massive loss for Ajax, especially as they are looking for a top striker to bang in the goals in the second half of the season. Ajax lost striker Lebogang Manyama to SuperSport United earlier in the transfer window, and have only bolstered their squad with players from their youth academy.
Ajax struggled at times during the first half of the season to convert their chances. They have to get big strikers upfront that can hold the ball up, and Majoro, who has pace and loves to run off the last defender’s shoulder, would have brought some variety to their attack.
But Efstathiou is not giving up hope of landing a prolific goal-scorer.
“A striker is our main priority, because that is the department where we lacked in the first half of the season. We should have scored more goals.”
Majoro recently snubbed SuperSport United after the Pretoria side and Chiefs agreed on terms.
But the deal fell through after the player initially agreed terms with SuperSport.
