CAPE TOWN – It took a third priority meeting to finalise Athlone Stadium as the venue for the Ajax Cape Town vs Kaizer Chiefs fixture, but the go-ahead was finally given on Wednesday morning.

The match takes place on Saturday night (kick-off 8.15pm).

With Cape Town Stadium unavailable because of a music festival, two previous organising meetings, which include representatives from Ajax, the police, the traffic department and the city’s disaster management, had vetoed the use of Athlone Stadium for the Ajax-Chiefs game because of security concerns.

This high-profile match has attracted crowds of around 35 000 over the last two years, while Athlone only has a 21 000 capacity.

For Saturday, tickets will be capped at 21 000, but the concern is, as has happened in the past, that many more ticketless fans will pitch up and create problems within the perimeter of the venue.

Needless to say, with the game now going ahead, there will be a considerable police and security presence – and supporters are urged that, if they do not have a ticket, to stay at home.
