Johannesburg - Title contenders SuperSport United scored two late goals to save their blushes in a Premiership clash against Ajax Cape Town in Polokwane on Saturday evening.

Khama Billiat was the centre of attention in the closing stages of the first half.

Billiat, who came on as a substitute for injured Lebogang Manyama in the 18th minute, was set up by Thembinkosi Fanteni, finding the back of the net with a stunning strike 20 minutes later to give Ajax the lead.

With a couple of minutes left in the first half, however, Billiat was sent off for a tackle on Morgan Gould as the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

Four minutes after the break, SuperSport goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez did well to keep the visitors out, with Fanteni fluffing a gifted opportunity.

First Fernandez blocked a close-ranger header, and then Fanteni hit the crossbar from the rebound.

Ashley Hartog eventually found the equaliser, netting a tame long-range effort with 15 minutes left.

His freak shot deflected off the boot of Ajax defender Matthew Booth, and after a funny bounce, it lobbed into the net, with Ajax keeper Sander Westerveld left holding his arms in the air in frustration.

Atusaye Nyondo found the winner with six minutes remaining to keep United's title hopes alive.

SuperSport, who were five points behind log leaders Orlando Pirates ahead of the weekend fixtures, would have been relieved to save a vital point with four matches left in the championship race.
