Johannesburg – Moroka Swallows have gone one point clear of SuperSport United at the top of the Premiership log after a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday.
The opening 30 minutes of the first half were a dull affair with Swallows midfielder Lerato Chabangu being the most industrious player on either side.
After some clever footwork in the 30th minute Chabangu found Siyabonga Nomvete inside the box, but the veteran striker had his effort well saved by Maritzburg goalkeeper Shuaib Walters.
Walters' goal proved to be the busiest of the two during the opening stanza as Greg Etafia hardly had a save to make.
The Maritzburg goalkeeper was again called into action in the 41st minute when Birds captain Lefa Tsutsulupa released Edward Manqele down the left with a defence-splitting pass.
Again Walters came out on top, thwarting Manqele's one-on-one effort to keep the score at 0-0 at the break.
The second half picked up where the first ended with the home side applying significant pressure during the first five minutes.
First Nomvete failed to connect with a Luvhengo Mungomeni cross after the defender found space down the right flank.
Manqele then failed to tap in Levi Mokgothu's cross from inside the six yard box.
The opening goal came in the 68th minute against the run of play when substitute Thokozani Sekotlong found space inside the box to side-foot past Etafia.
The goal galvanised Swallows into action as they went in search of an equaliser which came in the 75th minute, gift wrapped by Maritzburg's goalkeeper.
The man who had been flawless until then, cleared a ball straight to Swallows' Dikgang Mabalane.
The winger delivered an inch-perfect cross that found an unmarked Mungomeni who headed home. – Sapa
