Cape Town Stadium will be the home ground for Ajax Cape Town for the next three football seasons.

Yesterday councillors approved the financial agreement between the City of Cape Town and the club. All its home games will take place at the stadium in Green Point until 2017.

Garreth Bloor, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development said the city was pleased that Ajax will call the stadium home. Cape Town

“The team has a huge following of soccer enthusiasts and we are excited that the iconic Cape Town Stadium will be their home ground for the next three seasons,” he said.

The city will carry the stadium’s direct cost and specific service costs for the games. Income from ticket sales will be paid to the city until the estimated R3 million direct costs have been recouped. Bloor said the city expected the sale of 57 000 tickets up to 2017 would be adequate to cover the event costs. Ajax has agreed to contribute R270 000 should there be a shortfall.

Bloor said information of the last three seasons’ ticket sales reveal that this is a viable model. Ajax and the city will share income generated through sponsorships or income streams identified by the club.

He said the city was supporting emerging talent from previously disadvantaged areas. It has spent more than R90m to install 21 synthetic pitches in areas such as Manenberg, Bishop Lavis, Imizamo Yethu, Westridge, Scottsdene, Grassy Park and Gugulethu. Four new synthetic pitches worth R20m will be completed next year in Steenberg, Heideveld, Crossroads and Kewtown. – Cape Times
