Johannesburg - Kaizer Chiefs take on Polokwane City in Soweto on Tuesday night, with a further three matches scheduled for Wednesday evening.
AmaKhosi have moved up to third on the table with successive wins over SuperSport, Bidvest Wits, Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows. Polokwane, meanwhile, have slipped to 13th after three losses in a row.
Chiefs coach Steve Komphela is hoping that his side’s recent run of form will help open up the league title race again, Sundowns having threatened to pull clear at one point.
“Our hopes of winning the League have never been off. Maybe those outside might have seen it differently, but it has never been off,” he said.
“Maybe the fact that there was a result, a draw between Sundowns and Golden Arrows, that immediately triggered more awareness and the desire to want to go further and maybe warm the hopes of going all the way. It’s nice now we got three points [against SuperSport] and the gap is slowly getting narrower.”
Free State Stars (10th), who lost to Chippa United on the weekend and only have one win in their last five, host Ajax Cape Town in an earlier kick off (6pm) at Goble Park on Wednesday. The Urban Warriors have shown improved form with three wins in their last five outings to move into the top eight.
League leaders Mamelodi Sundowns dropped two points, a rarity for them, with a 0-0 draw against Arrows on the weekend. They will be hoping to return to maximum point form when they meet a Black Aces side that is winless in their last five matches.
In the final game on Wednesday, Maritzburg United will be buoyed by their weekend win over Bloemfontein Celtic, only a second Absa Premiership victory this campaign. But they face a tough test when they take on title hopefuls Bidvest Wits in Pietermaritzburg, the Students with two wins from their last three games and sitting second on the table.
