Cape Town - It’s a critical night of football at the top and bottom of the PSL standings.

Across the country, all eyes will be on Polokwane where Kaizer Chiefs can clinch the PSL title if they pick up a point against SuperSport United on Wednesday night.

In the Mother City, the two PSL clubs - Ajax Cape Town and Chippa United - will be watching with great interest to see how basement side Black Leopards fair against Orlando Pirates in Soweto this evening.

Leopards have 23 points, Chippa 25 and Ajax 28.

Ajax need a point in their final fixture against Golden Arrows on Saturday to ensure PSL survival, but Chippa are hoping to sneak into a play-off spot by finishing second last. The bottom PSL club is relegated.

If Leopards defeat Pirates on Wednesday night, it does make Chippa’s task that much more difficult.

Chiefs, though, are the team of the moment - and this is their time to shine. They haven’t won the league title since 2005, but former Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter is all set to spectacularly deliver on his mandate.

Even Ajax coach Muhsin Ertugral, a former Amakhosi coach, paid tribute to Baxter’s contribution at the popular Soweto club.

“I think Stuart Baxter has quickly worked out how a team like Chiefs functions,” said Ertugral. “And he has done very well. Their transition play, from defence to attack, is impressive, while he has also intelligently changed their systems and formations to suit the opposition they are facing.

“Most importantly, what has been great about Chiefs this season is the professionalism. I think that, in SA football, often teams play with far too much emotion, much like Ajax did when we beat Chiefs recently. But, over a long season, emotion only gets you so far. To win a league needs more, and Chiefs have had it this season.”
