Chiefs’ Masango eyes Bafana call-upComment on this story
Johannesburg – Having netted four times in his five games this season, Kaizer Chiefs winger Mandla Masango has set his sights on a call-up to the national team.
“Anything is possible. If I continue to work hard, I will get a call-up,” Masango said at Chiefs’ training base in Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Less than 12 hours earlier, the speedster netted a lone goal for Amakhosi, which handed the Soweto outfit a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic on Tuesday night.
Masango has played in every game for Chiefs this season although he was only included in the starting line-up as a replacement for first-choice winger Siphiwe Tshabalala.
When Tshabalala injured himself during a pre-season friendly against Chippa United last month, Masango grabbed his opportunity and scored a superb brace in the opening round of the MTN8
competition against Black Aces.
Ten days later, he scored against Aces again before sealing maximum points in the 80th minute against Celtic, with a side-footed finish.
As a player considered surplus to requirements for a number of seasons, Masango said he kept his eye on the prize and continued to remain optimistic about his chances under coach Stuart Baxter.
“Everyone is going an extra mile to make sure that we produce the results this season,” Masango said.
“Football is a funny game. Even when people write you off, you must work hard. Your destiny is in your own hands.
“I stay behind at training and work on my finishing. The results are starting to pay off.”
Turning his attention to Sunday’s MTN8 semi-final, second leg, Masango believed the Glamour Boys would have to be on their toes against Platinum Stars, despite leading the tie 2-0 on aggregate.
“We have to work harder than in the first leg. We will give it our best this Sunday.” – Sapa
