CAPE TOWN – Aubrey Ngoma is Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler’s pick for PSL Player of the Season.

At a press conference on Tuesday, ahead of the Cape club’s match against Golden Arrows at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night (kick-off 7.30pm), Tinkler was asked to take off his City hat, think about the campaign objectively, and offer his opinion on the best player in the league this season.

The former Bafana Bafana midfielder gave it some thought and decided on his own left-wing, Ngoma.

“Now you’re putting me under pressure,” said Tinkler on being asked the question. “Obviously, Aubrey Ngoma and Lebogang Manyama have both been fantastic for us, but I also think Tau (Percy) has been phenomenal for Sundowns. He is a huge talent.

“But, overall, in my opinion, I would say Ngoma… Taking nothing away from what Manyama has done, but Ngoma has been consistent throughout the season in terms of the goals and assists he has provided.”

Tinkler also revealed some thoughts on why Manyama was tasked with leading City this season.

“You could always see the talent, but I had always been a bit negative about Manyama, when looking from outside,” said the City coach.

“But once I got to know him as a person here at City, and saw his work ethic at training, I knew that he was a player who needed to be challenged. And that is why I made him the captain… And he has certainly led by example.”
