Extra Strong Team of the Week

Mamelodi Sundowns flexed their muscle this week, showing the depth of their squad and somehow they managed to return unscathed from Pietermaritzburg. The Brazilians played a 'B-side' against Maritzburg United last week to juggle their three commitments - the league, MTN8 and CAF Champions League.

Samuel Julies impressed in that game as he held his own at left-back. It’s a position that’s up for grabs in the 'A-team' with Tebogo Langerman not at his best, while Mzikayise Mashaba is out injured. It will take a consistent display, though, for Julies to get the nod ahead of Langerman.

Tapuwa Kapini on the other hand doesn’t have to deal with much competition. The No 1 jersey at Highlands Park is his. He ensured that the rookies start the season with a win when he saved two penalties against Baroka to keep the Lions of the North in the match. Kapini was solid at the back while Brian Onyango showed flair and defensive stability for the Team of Choice. Roscoe Pietersen and Siphiwe Mnguni complete the back four.

Thabang Monare and Willard Katsande make up the central midfield while, Percy Tau and Thabo Mosadi bring speed on the flanks. The Africa Cup of Nations bound Zimbabwean pair of Khama Billiat and Tendai Ndoro supply the fire-power upfront.
