Johannesburg – A former Bloemfontein Celtic soccer player has been arrested for allegedly throwing a fire bomb into his wife's car at their home in Wilgehof, Bloemfontein, Free State police said on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old man was arrested on Monday night, Captain Chaka Marope said.

He apparently threw a bottle, containing an unknown flammable liquid and a lit cloth fuse, into his wife's car after the couple had an argument.

“The vehicle caught fire inside and the woman sustained serious burn wounds in the face, hands and legs,” Marope said.

The woman was rescued by neighbours and was admitted to hospital.

The man was expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of attempted murder and malicious damage to property. – Sapa
