BLOEMFONTEIN – Free State Stars have announced the release of eight players in a cull of the squad after a disappointing season saw them narrowly avoid relegation from the Absa Premiership.

The contracts Angelo Kerspuy, Thabang Matuka, David Nkausu, Nhlakanipho Ntuli, Mbuyiselo Thethani and Nyiko Tshabangu all came to an end in June. On Monday the club released a statement saying that they would not have their contracts renewed

Also departing are Bokang Tlhone, who had already agreed to a pre-contract with newly crowned champions Bidvest Wits, and Moeketsi Sekola, who was the top scorer in the league two seasons ago, who has joined relegated Highlands Park.

“They will no doubt be missed following the expiry of their contracts,” said the club.

Stars will return for pre-season preparations at the end of the month under coach Serame Letsoaka, who joined the club in January when he replaced Giovanni Solinas.

Stars finished the season in 14th place, one place above the relegation zone ahead of Baroka FC on goal difference only.
