JOHANNESBURG – Kaizer Chiefs, who celebrate their 47th birthday on Saturday, are back on the training pitch to prepare for the second half of the South African season following a festive season break.

The Amakhosi announced on their website that they resumed training on Friday ahead of their first game against Free State Stars on February 7.

Steve Komphela’s side are currently fourth on the Premiership log, but will hope that Zimbabwean star Willard Katsande returns from the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Gabon without any injury problems.

Captain Itumeleng Khune (back) was among five players who had injuries going into the break, which includes George Lebese (back), William Twala (calf muscle), Tsepo Masilela (groin) and Enocent Mkhabela (abdominal pain).

Four players who are on an “experimental visit” to train with English Championship side Fulham in London are Emmanuel Letlotlo, Lorenzo Gordinho, Siyanda Ngezana and Ryan Moon, who will be back at Naturena on January 12.

There will be some new faces in training over the next few weeks as the Amakhosi will run their eye over possible signings such as striker Gustavo Paez, from Italy, and defenders Pedro Henrique Dias de Amorim from Brazil, Miracle Gabeya (Malawi) and Ismael Olivier Toure (Ivory Coast) before the transfer window closes on January 31.
