Jomo Cosmos were all but assured of relegation to the First Division after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Maritzburg United in their Premiership encounter in Daveyton on Saturday.

Cosmos had the best chance of a dull first half after Michael Morton brought down Mark Haskins, who fired a long-range free kick wide to the right in the 38th minute.

Earlier, in the only other moment of mild excitement in the opening period, Themba Tshabalala was shown a yellow card for a tackle on Cuthbert Malajila in the 17th minute.

The hosts eventually spiced things up 10 minutes after the break when Elhadji Samb netted from inside the area to put them ahead.

Maritzburg, however, struck back with 19 minutes remaining in the match, when a Felix Obada cross from the left found Malajila who headed home the equaliser.

Siyabonga Nontshinga had a last-ditch effort for Cosmos a few minutes later, but he drilled his long-range effort wide.

While Cosmos, who hold a game in hand, must win their last two matches by significant margins to stand any chance of retaining their place in the Premiership, Maritzburg remained in 11th place in the table with one game left in the season. – Sapa
