Johannesburg - Jomo Cosmos handed their Absa Premiership survival prospects a massive injection when they beat relegation rivals University of Pretoria 1-0 over the weekend.

Jomo Sono’s men are now out of the relegation zone, three points clear of Tuks and four in front of Maritzburg United with only nine points in the season still avail for each of the trio.

The Team of Choice could have joined Cosmos in making survival progress, but instead lost to Maritzburg United 2-1.

Sono, whose side must still face the KwaZulu-Natalians on the final day of the season, believes Ezenkosi are all but safe and just need four points to avoid dropping to the National First Division next season.

“We need to win one and one draw,” he said. “These guys (Tuks) are in trouble. They still have to face (Mamelodi) Sundowns…they won’t beat Pitso Mosimane.”

The Brazilians are seeking to win the title and currently lead the standings by six points from Bidvest Wits.

They place the relegation-threatened University side on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Sono was not bothered how they won their game against Tuks, just about the three points they gained.

“In the first half we played like a world class team and in the second half we said we have to defend this one,” he added. “We defended very well and we don’t care how the game was.

“You don’t get points by playing well. You get points by winning matches and that we have done.”
