Johannesburg - Bidvest Wits goalkeeper Kyle Peters walked off the pitch following their 1-1 draw against Ajax Cape Town this past weekend clearly peeved by the result.

It was their first draw in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC), after they'd produced four consecutive wins in their previous matches.

The goal he conceded in the first period ended a run of two clean sheets he had produced for his new club in their last three games, after having joined them on a free transfer from Cape Town All Stars three months ago.

Peters believes that his side could have won the encounter with ease had they simply made use of the opportunities they were presented with in the attacking third.

“We gave it our all but unfortunately it was not to be for us,” Peters said. “I’m a bit peeved about that, everybody is. It was a good free-kick. There was nothing that I could have done to stop it. We’ll have to move on from the result.

“And just looking at this team, I honestly believe that we can go all the way and compete for honours this season. I truly believe we stand a good chance of wining the MDC.

“What’s important for us though is that we have to continue being level headed while putting in the required hard work in training to get us there. If we can do that, then I don’t see anything stopping us.”

Well, the bad news for Peters and his teammates is that they’ve got the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns and Highlands Park who are relishing the prospect of seeing them slip-up in their upcoming fixtures. Both Highlands and the Braamfontein outfit are tied on 10 points after four games, while Sundowns are a point adrift.

In order to realise their dream of winning the MDC this season, Wits will have to continue winning more, while hoping for the worst to happen to their closest competitors. Failure to do so might see the Clever Boys lose the race when it matters most, as they still have about 10 games to go before this season comes to an end.

Meanwhile, Wits MDC coach Glen Salmon expressed his frustration at how his side played on the day, saying that they need to be more clinical in front goal if they are to be crowned champions.

“Well, you can’t be on a winning streak forever,” Salmon said. “But I truly believe we should have won this encounter by at least 10 goals. But these things happen in football. It’s part of their learning curve. The first game we played we scored everything we touched (against Chiefs). In this match, we lacked the composure needed to bury our chances. We’ll need to improve on that.”

Weekend MDC Results:
