Cape Town - Wilfred Mugeyi has been appointed as the new head coach of Chippa United.

In another sensational announcement from the newest Cape PSL club on Tuesday it was revealed that Farouk Abrahams had been fired as coach and would be replaced by former Ajax Cape Town assistant-coach, Mugeyi.

Mugeyi becomes the fifth coach at Chippa in the club’s six-month spell as a PSL club, following the departure of former head coaches Manqoba Mngqithi, Roger Sikhakane, Julius Dube and now Abrahams.

Mngqithi was fired after just two games in charge.

The axing of Abrahams, though, has come as a surprise because he has done well with the team in a short space of time and has been responsible for the injection of some confidence and self-belief into the squad.

According to Abrahams, the club’s decision to fire him came “out of the blue”, and he believed it had to with issues raised by the players who weren’t part of his plans for the club.

Club owner Chippa Mpengesi is not a man known for his patience - and now the Philippi-based club will have to start all over again, with another new man at the helm.

For Mugeyi, it’s the first opportunity to act as the head coach of a PSL club. The 43-year-old Zimbabwean was a top striker for Umtata-based Bush Bucks during his days as player, and won the PSL’s Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer awards in 1996/97.

He went on to play in China and Israel and, on his return to South Africa, finished his career at Ajax, where he then went on to develop his coaching experience.

Meanwhile, Chippa have strengthened their squad with the signing of former Bafana captain Mbulelo Mabizela and ex-SuperSport United midfielder Masibusane Zongo.
