Orlando Pirates have named Augusto Palacios as the club's new head coach.

Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza confirmed on Wednesday that the Premiership champions had penned a deal with Palacios for the 2012/13 season.

Khoza said Palacios, the long-time head of development at the club, would retain his previous post, on top of his new role as head coach.

“This will enable Palacios to have a 'see-through' benefit that will ensure the club does not lose out on players in whose development he has dedicated much effort,” Khoza said in a statement on the club's website.

Palacios was appointed as an interim replacement for Julio Cesar Leal, who was sacked in March, and steered the Buccaneers through the final stages of the season as they defended their Premiership crown and secured a trophy treble for the second season in succession.

“I am grateful for the opportunities and support I have received from the chairman in the many years I have been with Orlando Pirates,” Palacios said. - Sapa
