Johannesburg – George Maluleka struck in the first half as SuperSport United edged the University of Pretoria 1-0 in a derby clash at Tuks Stadium on Wednesday night, remaining unbeaten in the early stages of the Premiership season.
AmaTuks started well, and came close to snatching the early lead, but Mpho Maruping slammed his header against the post.
Seconds later Maruping had another attempt but he fired wide to the left as SuperSport warded off the early pressure.
After a few tame efforts from both sides, United struck midway through the first half when Maluleka netted for the visitors.
Maluleka had another chance five minutes into the second stanza, after Mame Niang was brought down by Siyabonga Ngubane, but he blasted his effort too high.
Fighting back in search of the equaliser, Tuks came close when a Mpho Matsi header was directed over the bar with 25 minutes remaining.
The hosts had further chances in the dying minutes of the match, but Thabo Mosadi missed wide to the left, and United keeper Ronwen Williams safely held off challenges from Tebogo Monyai and Dipsy Selolwane as the visitors grabbed three valuable points.
Tuks, meanwhile, went down in their second successive defeat after a wobbly start to the league season. – Sapa
