Kaizer Chiefs hit back in the dying stages for a 2-1 win over Free State Stars in Phuthaditjhaba on Saturday afternoon.
Both sides saw their mathematical chances of securing the Premiership title fade away.
They traded blows for the first half hour, with Mpho Maleka taking the first real shot when Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune parried away his effort in the 13th minute.
Amakhosi charged forward midway through the opening period, but their strikers were wayward with Lincoln Zvasiya and Bernard Parker both sending their shots wide of the Stars goal.
The home side went ahead in the 32nd minute when Nigerian Gege Soriola connected with a cross from Mpho Makola to bury a close-range strike.
Rather than sitting back, Stars pushed ahead in the early stages of the second stanza, though Edward Manqele and Zakari Morou both blasted over the crossbar.
Compounding their frustration, as Stars went in search of another goal, Mzikayise Mashaba missed left with a close-range shot and Edward Manqele blasted an effort to the right.
Chiefs eventually capitalised with 11 minutes left when Lehlohonolo Majoro set up an opportunity for Siphiwe Tshabalala who found the back of the net for the equaliser.
Majoro, on the right wing, created another opportunity in injury time, with Josta Dladla scoring the winner.
Amakhosi climbed one place up the standings, leapfrogging Stars into fifth position with one game left in the league campaign. – Sapa
