Soccer writer Tshepang Mailwane looks at the players who have set the PSL scene alight so far this season.

Lerato Chabangu

(Moroka Swallows)

It’s not all grim at Moroka Swallows. Just watch Lerato Chabangu, a man who keeps getting better by the season and you realise there are still a few reasons for them to smile despite their financial constraints. At times, Swallows could easily forget their boardroom troubles when they watch Chabangu charging forward gracefully into the opposition half, eliminating one player after another. He is such a threat going forward and when he is around, Swallows are always dangerous. He currently tops the scoring charts with four goals.

Moeketsi Sekola

(Free State Stars)

Classic Free State Stars! They get an unknown player, turn him into a star and then in a few seasons sell the player for big bucks. Moeketsi Sekola could make the club some money not too long from now if he carries on with his impressive performances. Sekola has scored three goals in the league for Stars, who have bounced back quite well after their opening weekend defeat to Chiefs. And he is not only scoring the goals, but he is creating them as well.

Reneilwe Letsholonyane

(Chiefs)

The PSL does not have a Frank Lampard or a Steve Gerrard, you know, a midfielder who can score 10 or more goals a season. But wait. At the moment, Amakhosi midfielder Ren-eilwe Letsholonyane is looking more of a threat in the opposition box than he ever has before, making those dangerous late runs which leaves defenders at sixes and sevens. He’s not just a midfield grafter, but a decent finisher as well, with two league goals in five matches.

Kermit Erasmus

(Orlando Pirates)

After a slow start to the season in front of goal, Kermit Erasmus is now showing why Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt describes him as “the best finisher in the league”. The striker has banged in three classy goals in his last two league matches and looks hungry for more now that his teammate Lehlohonolo Majoro is pushing hard for a place in the starting line-up. Erasmus may not always be clinical in front of goal, but he is a valuable player for the Buccaneers upfront. He is strong, can pass the ball and uses both feet well.

Mandla Masango

(Kaizer Chiefs)

Mandla Masango’s message is clear: There is no way he is going back to the days of twiddling his thumbs on the bench. The attacking midfielder is having an amazing start to the season, with three goals in his five league matches thus far and a call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. He is a nightmare for defenders trying to stop him. The key, as with any player in hot form, is ensuring it does not all go to his head. - The Star
