Wits bag first victoryComment on this story
Johannesburg – Wits earned their first Premiership win of the new campaign, slamming home two second-half strikes to beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 in Milpark on Saturday night.
Calvin Kadi, returning to the Clever Boys setup from a spell in Greece, netted the opener in the 50th minute to break the deadlock.
Fellow striker Terror Fanteni – Wits' midweek signing – ensured the three points for the hosts with 18 minutes left.
It was also a maiden victory for Wits' Spanish coach, Antonio Lopez, since he took over at the start of the season.
The Students, who have four points after three games, bagged a deserved victory after dominating the match and holding ball possession in the first half.
Wits have made some bold signings in the off-season, including their domineering central midfield duo of Tinashe Nengomasha and Matty Pattison.
The visiting Free Staters, meanwhile, suffered a second loss from three matches.
Phunya Sele Sele had found some life in the second half, that had started at a frentic pace.
They had a chance to take the lead midway through the opening stanza as winger Joel Mogorosi's long range effort sailed narrowly over the bar.
In the second 45 minutes, they should have equalised on the hour mark, with striker Siyabonga Nontshinga blasting his shot over the bar from close range.
Celtic made late attempts as they tried to probe Wits in the final moments of the tie.
The home side's defence held firm, however, as they managed to keep a cleansheet in the fixture. – Sapa
