Rustenberg – Bidvest Wits handed Platinum Stars their first Absa Premiership defeat when they beat them 4-0 at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night.

A first half brace by Phakamani Mahlambi and two second half goals by Sibusiso Vilakazi and Papy Faty saw Gavin Hunt’s men walking away with the full three points. The win sees Wits moving to the second spot with 20 points.

Dikwena have now dropped to third spot with 18 points as Mamelodi Sundowns took the number one place after beating Chippa United 1-0.

The match started on a low note but in the 17th minute, the Clever Boys had a first shot at goal when Sibusiso Vilakazi saw his attempt going wide to the right of goalkeeper Bona Coundoul’s posts.

Two minutes later, Cavin Johnson’s charges replied with a set-piece when Masibusane Zongo kicked it up in search of striker Bonginkosi Ntuli but his header was off target.

It took the visitors 34 minutes to get their opening goal when youngster Phakamani Mahlambi netted in the box following a excellent feed from Vilakazi.

As Dikwena were looking to level the matters, poor defending at the back let them down four minutes later when the 18-year-old completed his brace making it 2-0.

With three minutes before half time, Stars were awarded a set piece and skipper, Vuyo Mere unleashed a shot. However, it went too high and failed to trouble Wits’ keeper Moeneeb Josephs.

Three minutes into the second half, the Braamfontein outfit made it three when Vilakazi scored from a Daine Klate assist.

In the 53rd minute, Ndumiso Mabena tried to pull one for the home side with a shot but his former Orlando Pirates teammate, Josephs, denied him as he collected the ball safely.

With 12 minutes to go to full time, the hosts showed a great deal of appetite and netted their fourth when Faty scored with a fine header.

In the dying minutes of the tie, neither side could produce clear-cut opportunities as Wits handed Dikwena their maiden 2015 league loss. – ANA
