Bidvest Wits moved up to fourth place on the Absa Premiership log with a 2-0 away win over Free State Stars at Goble Park on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from Matthew Pattison and Sibusiso Vilakazi ended a run of three league matches without a win for the Clever Boys.
Stars’ Luyolo Nomandela was the first to really threaten a goal, though his 12th minute effort flashed wide of the left-hand upright.
Three minutes later Danny Venter went for goal direct from a free kick and forced Wits goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs into parrying the ball away to safety.
In the 19th minute the Clever Boys had their first effort on target. Matthew Pattison went for goal direct from a free kick, but ‘keeper Daniel Agyei was able to punch the effort away from danger.
By the half hour mark both teams had settled into a rhythm and were exchanging half chances fairly regularly, though neither Agyei nor Josephs were particularly stretched in keeping a clean sheet up to the end of the first half.
It took Wits just 12 minutes of the second half to open the scoring. Ryan Chapman teed up birthday boy Matthew Pattison to send a right-footed effort beyond the reach of Agyei and make it 1-0 to the visitors.
On 66 minutes the Clever Boys captain Sibusiso Vilakazi doubled their advantage, turning home an assist from Calvin Kadi to make it 2-0 and effectively seal the three points for the Johannesburg team.
With 20 minutes to play, Ea Lla Koto attacker Camaldine Abraw almost threw his side a lifeline, but his header from a corner kick drifted just wide of the target with Josephs beaten.
