London – In-form Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been ruled out of England's World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Friday due to injury, the Football Association announced on Thursday.
Sturridge, 24, has scored the only goal in three successive games to send Liverpool to the top of the Premier League, but he aggravated a groin injury in Sunday's 1-0 win over Manchester United.
However, England are hopeful he will be able to join up with the squad for Tuesday's trip to Ukraine in European qualifying Group H.
“As Roy Hodgson prepares his England team to face Moldova on Friday evening, Daniel Sturridge has returned to Liverpool for further treatment,” read a statement on the FA website.
“The squad departed St. George's Park on Thursday afternoon ahead of the World Cup qualifier at Wembley, but the Liverpool forward will return to his club with the intention of joining the England squad again at the weekend and travelling to Ukraine.”
With Wayne Rooney also absent due to a head injury, England manager Hodgson is expected to turn to United striker Danny Welbeck to lead the line against the Moldovans. – Sapa-AFP
